macOS Gatekeeper and True Protection
True Protection by Jag complements macOS Gatekeeper by providing additional scanning and threat detection beyond what Gatekeeper and XProtect offer. This article explains how True Protection integrates with native macOS security features.
How They Work Together
- Gatekeeper: Verifies that downloaded applications are signed by identified developers and notarized by Apple. It blocks unsigned or unnotarized apps by default.
- XProtect: Apple built-in malware scanner that checks against a limited set of known malware signatures.
- True Protection: Provides comprehensive scanning with millions of threat signatures, behavioral analysis through JagAI, and real-time file monitoring that goes far beyond Gatekeeper and XProtect.
Required macOS Permissions
- Full Disk Access: Required for scanning all files on the system, including those in protected areas.
- System Extension: Required for real-time protection and the firewall module.
- Network Filter: Required for web shield and network monitoring capabilities.
- Notifications: Required for displaying threat alerts and scan results.
Granting Permissions
After installation, True Protection will guide you through granting each required permission. If you need to modify permissions later, navigate to System Settings > Privacy & Security and locate True Protection in each relevant category. A restart of True Protection is required after changing permissions.
